In Germany, Das Häkchen unter “zeitnah erforderlich” (the checkmark under “required promptly”) can be selected by health care providers during the application process for psychotherapy, if the patient is considered in significant need, e.g. in cases of severe depression.
The photo series of the same name deals with inner states of hopelessness. Feelings of sorrow are transformed into intimate self-portraits and projected onto a stylized liminal space, which changes between familiar functionality and model-like distance.
The leading themes are centered around belonging to a society, which is perceived as strange and surreal, figuring out ones’ identity while trying not to succumb to social pressure, and finding a way to gain new perspective when faced with an uncertain future.
Who am I when I am coming back home from work? What does really make me happy, and how much of that do I need? Where do I find myself when I am truly alone for once?
Striving to rediscover how it feels to feel, Edward Roth is trying to escape.
